BLOCKPRINTED FABRIC FROM RAJASTAN

When I traveled to Jaipur last September, I had the incredible opportunity to meet skilled block print artisans who shared with me the magic of this centuries-old craft. Watching them work with such precision and patience—hand-carving intricate designs into wooden blocks and stamping them onto fabric—made me truly appreciate the immense craftsmanship behind each piece.

Every fabric told its own story, brought to life with natural dyes and the careful layering of patterns. The dedication and artistry of this technique deeply moved me, and I knew then that I had to bring this beautiful tradition into my own designs.

The process

The process begins with the outline block, known as the "rekh" block, which sets the foundation of the design. This is usually a darker shade and defines the pattern’s structure. Once the outline is printed, the artisan moves on to the filler blocks, known as "datta" blocks, which add depth and detail to the design. These blocks are dipped in natural dyes and carefully stamped to fill specific sections of the outlined motifs, creating a rich, layered effect. Between each layer, the fabric is left to dry before the next color is applied, preventing smudging and ensuring crisp, defined patterns.

For multi-colored designs, each shade is applied separately, requiring multiple blocks that must be perfectly aligned. To do so, the artisan carefully registers each block, ensuring that no overlap or misalignment disrupts the final composition. Some designs also include highlight blocks, which add intricate detailing, fine textures, or delicate dots to enhance the visual depth of the print.

Our selection, our blockprint collection

The fabrics I’ve chosen are inspired by the beauty of nature, and with only a few meters available, I was able to create a limited number of garments. This makes each piece even more special, as only one of its kind will be ever made.

Through this collection, I aim to preserve the rich tradition of block printing and honor the artisans who pour their heart and soul into crafting each fabric by hand, creating something truly exceptional with every stamp and print they made!
